Pregnancy and Infants’ Birth WeightIt is well known that many factors are able to influence the incidence of infants’ birth weight. Maternal weight before pregnancy and maternal weight gain during pregnancy are closely related with the infants’ birth weight.


This study is conducted to find the relationship between maternal weight gains during pregnancy and infants’ birth weight. The method used for this study is analytical research with Cross Sectional approach, using samples of 37 pregnant women who consulted their pregnancy to the midwife in the village of Payacut Peusangan, Bireun District.


The data was processed by Chio-SQUARE statistical test with degrees of significance 0.05. From the result of the study, it was revealed that there is the relationship between the maternal weight gains during pregnancy and infants’ birth weight. Odds ratio of the value obtained is greater than one (OR> 1), this indicates that maternal weight gain is a risk factor of the occurrence of normal infants’ birth weight.


And the possibility of normal birth weight babies for pregnant women who have normal weight gain is 21.6 times compared with pregnant women who experience abnormal weight gain. The conclusion that can be drawn that there is a relationship between maternal weight gains during pregnancy and infants’ birth weight in the village of Payacut Peusangan, Bireun District in 2011-2012.
